Electric trucks are becoming increasingly popular due to their many benefits! Are you considering buying an e-truck? We list the pros and cons for you.
Advantages electric trucks
- Environmentally friendly: the electric truck has no internal combustion engine, so there are no harmful exhaust emissions. This ultimately ensures cleaner air, contributing to the EU’s climate goals.
- Lower costs due to electric drive: switching to an electric truck eliminates the need for expensive fuels. In addition, an electric truck runs more efficiently and the cost of running on electricity is lower. We take as an example the Scania BEV e-truck (NL) with a 375 kWh battery and a range of up to 400 km. Charging an electric truck at the company costs about 0.26 euros per kWh. 0.26 euros per kWh * 375 kWh = €97.50 for a full battery. The average fuel consumption of a diesel truck is 30 to 40 liters of fuel per 100 km. So if you drive 400 km you need about 120 to 160 liters of fuel. The average price for diesel is currently €1,877. This means that for a full diesel tank you will spend between €225 and €300. So for the diesel truck you are at least €125 more expensive for a driving distance of 400km.
- Subsidies and tax benefits: when buying an e-truck, it is possible to apply for a subsidy under certain conditions. There are several subsidy schemes for zero emission trucks: subsidy scheme Purchase Emission Free Trucks(AanZET) and the Clean and Emission-free Construction Traffic Subsidy Scheme(SSEB).In addition, the Environmental Investment Allowance(MIA/Vamil scheme) qualifies you for (tax) benefits.
- Improved performance: electric trucks have faster acceleration. Because an electric motor instantly delivers maximum torque (Nm), an e-truck gets moving faster.
- Transportation company image: sustainability is playing an increasing role in every sector More and more consumers/companies value sustainability and by responding to this, you create a positive perception among your target group.
Disadvantages of electric trucks
- Limited supply: there is relatively little supply in electric trucks. Truck manufacturers are constantly developing, but compared to the supply of electric passenger cars, it is minimal.
- Higher purchase cost: an electric truck is 1.5 to 4 times more expensive to buy than a fuel-powered truck. An electric truck easily costs between €250,000 to €300,000. Subsidies do make it more attractive to purchase an electric truck.
- Long charging time: charging an empty battery from an e-truck can take between 2 and 10 hours, depending on the type of charger. While a diesel truck is refueled within minutes.
At TrucksNL, we are noticing a growing interest in electric trucks. Soon, we expect to see the first e-truck on our platform . Technical advances, social pressures and government regulations are making e-trucks increasingly attractive for the future.
